Case Study No 1 – Exploration – Frontier licensing and exploration drilling in the Faroe Islands for BP
ACG’s Mike George, then Senior HSE Advisor, BP Aberdeen Exploration Group, was actively involved in the preparation and setting up of offices, contracts, HSE support and frontier exploration drilling operations on the Faroes Continental Shelf for BP. This took place in the late 90’s/early Millennium culminating in the drilling of an exploration well from a deep-water drill ship in 2001. Mike played a leading role working with the Regulator to develop new relevant fit-for-purpose safety and environmental legislation to facilitate wild-cat drilling in the first license round on the Faroese Continental Shelf.
Mike was part of the management Team setting up a local office in Tørshavn, an offshore support base in Runavik and chaired the joint industry workgroup in setting-up Emergency Response facilities with the Danish and Faroese Authorities. During this period emphasis was also placed on social responsibility, environmental and cultural sensitivities including the holding of a public exhibition and information meetings.
